Founded by foremost night-time city expert and urbanist Ali Turnham, MAKE Associates are leaders in researching, inspiring, planning and measuring cities at night. Indeed, night-time economy is a term we popularised back in the 90s when we created the very first strategy for a city after dark.
We work globally but are based in London. We chose London because we think it’s the greatest after dark city on earth.
To be a MAKEr you have to live for the night. That’s because we are passionate about creating exciting, diverse, welcoming, safe, economically successful and beautifully designed towns and cities after dark. We help create places that people want to visit, live and work in: the night is not separate to the day, but absolutely critical to holistic placemaking.
We have long argued that cities at night are about more than nightlife, important (and fun!) though that is. It’s incredibly gratifying that our long-held beliefs about transport, public services, culture, community cohesion and improving night workers’ conditions are now receiving the mainstream attention they deserve.
We deliver our projects using bespoke night-time versions of proven disciplines we’ve honed over the past two decades. These include placemaking, masterplanning, economic impact assessments, destination marketing, public realm design, street activation, safety and crime reduction, licensing studies, planning policy and consumer research.
Whilst we have developed a vast knowledge of town and cities after dark, we also love collaborating with experts in their own fields. Over the years we’ve worked with a diverse range of partners like Arup (design), Studio Egret-West (masterplanning), Hatch-Regeneris (economics), Sound Diplomacy (music), Big Sky (acoustics), ATCM (placemaking), T&T (licensing) and CMC (community engagement) to deliver the specialist elements of our most complex work. We are always looking for opportunities where we can bring in our collaborators’ expertise to enhance our client projects.
We provide our after dark expertise to mayors, local authorities and governments, as well as to city centre partnerships, business improvement districts and some of the world’s most cutting edge night-life operators.
