CLIENT: Preston City Council / Grosvenor Estates
PROJECT: Preston Night-Time economy Strategy
What were MAKE asked to do?
Working with the Association of Town and City Management our brief was to create a cohesive night-time masterplan that would compliment the main plan created by BDP for Grosvenor Estates' transformative scheme for Preston City Centre
How did MAKE do it?
We undertook a series of night-time audits of Preston city centre, mapping and segmenting the city's night time economy.
An after dark urban design appraisal was then performed to examine lighting, pedestrian movement, signage, crime hotspots and recommendations made how the city could work better as a while but also how best the new Grosvenor scheme was integrated at night into the city's spatial plan.
A final review of the city's policies and plans found significant blind spots in Licensig, planning and transport after dark. We made recommendations to bring the city up to best practice internationally.
What happened next?
The recommendations were used by Preston City Council and Grosvenor to refine the final iteration of its masterplan.
What unique value did MAKE bring to this project?
This was the first project we realised even world class masterplanners don't fully understand how cities work at night and that to create a functioning 24hour plan requires specialist expertise. We have since MAKErised more than ten masterplans by architects and urban designers to make them work better at night.
