Client: Portman Group
Project: Exeter Cost-Benefit Analysis of Night-Time Economy
What were MAKE asked to do?
Portman Group is the industry group promoting responsible alcohol consumption. It wanted to help locations that had challenges with their evening and night-time economies to better understand the scale of the benefits and measure the negative costs of their NTE so they could tackle these and reduce the demand on public services whilst growing a more sustainable after dark offer.
How did MAKE do it?
We used our own NightMix data to estimate the income, firm base and growth and of the town’s current night-time economy
We gathered publicly available cost data from ambulance, A&E and police sources.
We visited Exeter and mapped the physical evening and night-time economy, using ‘micro-urbanism ‘to identify areas for potential change and growth and areas for projects and intervention.
What happened next?
Our work was used as the starting point for developing a strategic approach to the evening and night-time for the first time in Exeter.
What unique value did MAKE bring to this project?
The report’s recognition of its paramedic-led safe space was important in developing further support and funding locally for this vital initiative.
