Less is More… for Liverpool : Fewer resources + MAKE strategy = lower crime
Despite its technical title, MAKE’s ‘Design out Crime’ project for Liverpool (acknowledged as the most holistic night-time economy strategy yet conceived) addressed everything from lighting and public space design to the leisure mix, urban governance, licensee relations and measuring change in the city after dark.
However, despite Liverpool being arguably the most exciting city outside of London right now, austerity Britain has not passed it by. But, despite losing 20 city centre police officers on a Friday and Saturday night, as well as a number of key council staff in cost-saving measures, MAKE’s after dark strategy is still being delivered. With over 60 of the strategy’s 65 actions now completed, violent crime is still falling (in contrast to some of its peer cities), new non-alcohol evening entertainment options are opening, and visitor surveys say the city is more exciting (and feels safer) than ever.
Well done to Liverpool: a superb mix of political leadership, visionary officers, greater entrepreneurs and residents who are open minded but demand to live in harmony with their city after dark.
