CLIENT: City of sydney council
PROJECT: Night Transport - A Comparative Study of Sydney, New York & London
What were MAKE asked to do?
Having already developed the key data to drive Sydney’s overall night-time strategy, we were asked if we could identify, relative to size and scale, if Sydney’s after dark transport provision and investment differed substantially to those in other world ‘capitals’, such as New York and London..
How did MAKE do it?
MAKE engaged directly with the chief operations officer of The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority and the managing director for director for planning at Transport for London to secure access to relevant data and further work by their team members.
We worked with each of the cities to provide first level comparisons between our own Sydney data for transport costs after 6pm and the data outputted to our specification by New York and London.
We sought to balance for issues such as types of transit and population and user numbers.
The findings showed clearly that while New York and London are larger, and there are numerous geographical differences that need to be taken into account, that Sydney’s transport provision after dark is substantially underpowered relative to the other two locations.
What happened next?
The work has been put to use by Sydney to lobby at state level for greater and later transport resources for its growing after dark economy.
What unique value did MAKE bring to this project?
As world leaders in the night-time economy MAKE were able to secure the participation of two of the world’s leading transport professionals. In turn, they were able to use our work in their own project development.
